As part of the phase 2 refurbishment of the Grade II listed Bodmin Jail, Twelve is now working on a new build Spa as an extension to The Bodmin Jail Hotel.
It is envisaged that the swimming pool will be contained in a new steel and glass structure. Its form is inspired by the tri-arched windows on the gable ends of the Naval and Women’s Wings, and a modern interpretation of the trefoil arched leisure pavilions of the Victorian era. Those pavilions were conceived as spaces of relaxation and leisure. The changing rooms will be placed in the link while the swimming pool will be in the main space raised to minimise the excavation and allow for the plant to be located below. A mezzanine above the changing rooms, overlooking the pool and accessed from the main space will accommodate a sauna, steam room, and spa showers.
The vision for the hotel spa is to further enhance the experience for the hotel guests. The design retains and enhances the unique atmosphere and sense of history that exists in the hotel. The new programme will be accommodated within a new glass and steel structure, with a recessed link between old and new.
