Our concept creates a new 770m2 entrance, museum and visitor attraction at Kents Cavern, which is an extensive system of caves, formed in Devonian Limestone, once occupied by prehistoric people and Ice Age animals. The caves are part of the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.
The design replaces the existing entrance huts with a new flat roof building, that projects outwards from the landscape. The columns that support the roof are fluted, and skylights within the flat roof are scooped, imitating the appearance of stalagmites and stalactites. Within the space, the cave wall is exposed and externally a green roof and hanging planting enhance the unique qualities of the space. Glazed front elevations optimise views in and out.
