Bodmin Jail Distillery

Client: Tudor Hotels

Status: Design

Following our transformation of the Grade II Listed Bodmin Jail Hotel, we have developed proposals to alter, extend and change the use of its surrounding buildings to accommodate a craft distillery attraction. Providing a complementary extension to the existing Bodmin Jail Visitor Attraction, our proposals introduce a high-quality craft distillery attraction, retail, food and beverage provision and a pub.

The overall aim is to enhance the existing visitor experience by increasing the current dwell time of guests and by attracting new visitors. The existing buildings within the site will be used for the retail, food and beverage offering, and public house. In doing so, we will reconnect the existing buildings to the former prison complex, encouraging visitors to explore and better understand the wider site, whilst enjoying new complementary experiences.

The craft distillery attraction will provide a multi-sensory experience for visitors. The upper level is accessible to the public, where they can observe the production of gin and partake in tasting. The lower level is concealed behind the existing jail walls, and will accommodate space for cask storage, production and delivery from the road at ground floor level. The upper mezzanine level will be visible over the existing wall and will be recessed to provide an external terrace. Proposed as a transparent element, the modern structure will allow visitors to see through to the existing buildings behind, ensuring the context remains intact. The design concept takes inspiration from the silhouette of gin glasses, with skylights inside the upper levels imitating their form.
