University of Sheffield leads the UK in Engineering Research Income and Investment

Ten years ago we completed The Diamond, home to the The University of Sheffield’s Faculty of Engineering. A state-of-the-art engineering hub, The Diamond has played a key role in securing the University’s position as the UK’s leader in engineering research income and investment. It was recently reported in the Higher Education Statistics Agency’s (HESA) latest figures, that Sheffield attracted the highest level of funding for engineering research for two academic years in a row, more than any other UK university.

The Diamond is one of the most advanced teaching, learning and lab spaces in the UK, providing specialist labs for analytics, bioengineering, materials science, robotics, fluids and aerospace engineering. Built for modern interdisciplinary teaching, its range of specialist lab spaces offer a hands-on learning experience for students, supporting their practical skills across all major engineering disciplines.

The space also allows academics, students and industry professionals to work together on projects that strengthen links between the University, major companies and other government-backed initiatives. Research conducted by the University of Sheffield has contributed to major advancements in sustainable aviation fuels, semiconductor technology and advanced manufacturing.

Rated as top nationally for the quality of its research environment (REF 2021), we are immensely proud of what The Diamond has helped the University and its Faculty of Engineering achieve, as we reflect on its success ten years on.
